Overcoming Dangerous Assumptions in Our Faith Journey

We often make assumptions about God, faith, and Christianity that can become dangerous stumbling blocks in our spiritual journey. These assumptions can limit our understanding of God's purpose and prevent us from fully experiencing His plan for our lives.

What Are Common Dangerous Assumptions About Faith?
Many people make assumptions like:
  • God always works for our happiness
  • Being a Christian means no more struggles
  • Spiritual leaders are above correction
  • All religions worship the same God
  • God cannot change, love, or save certain people

These assumptions often stem from incomplete understanding or personal biases rather than biblical truth.

What Are the Three Major Stumbling Blocks to Faith?
  • Ignorance - Lacking complete knowledge about God and His ways
  • Resistance - Fighting against God's will when it doesn't align with our expectations
  • Arrogance - Having an inflated view of our own importance and wisdom

How Can We Overcome These Stumbling Blocks?
To overcome ignorance:
  • Base beliefs on biblical truth, not opinions or experiences
  • Be a consistent student of God's Word
  • Allow the Holy Spirit to teach and guide understanding

To overcome resistance:
  • Accept God's ways even when we don't fully comprehend them
  • Trust in His wisdom rather than our own understanding
  • Remember His ways are higher than our ways

To overcome arrogance:
  • Approach God with humility
  • Recognize our need for His grace and mercy
  • Don't overestimate our own importance

Life Application
Take time this week to examine your assumptions about God and faith:
  • What expectations do you have that might be hindering your relationship with God?
  • Are your views of God shaped more by the world or by His Word?
  • In what areas do you need to trust God's wisdom over your own understanding?

Challenge: Commit to spending daily time in God's Word this week, asking Him to reveal any false assumptions you may hold and replace them with biblical truth. Approach Him with humility, ready to align your will with His rather than expecting Him to align with yours.
